St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church
New Orleans, Louisiana
St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church commissioned the architects to renovate much of its ground floor, creating a new chapel with expanded seating, transforming the former chapel into a library, and adding an outdoor columbarium garden. Drawing inspiration from the church’s Neo-Gothic details and from Eliel Saarinen’s Cranbrook Academy, the design incorporates oak paneling, pilasters, coffered ceilings, and stained-glass windows by Stephen Wilson, blending historic character with contemporary expression. The columbarium garden, shaded by a century-old live oak, evokes medieval cloisters, with stonework that echoes the church’s architecture and a Trinity-inspired fountain that also softens urban noise.
